Marrakech In Morocco - Travel Guide

Ait Benhaddou & Ouarzazate Day Trip

Planning a Marrakech day trip to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate was one of the best travel decisions I made in Morocco. Starting from the vibrant streets of Marrakech, I crossed the Atlas Mountains, explored ancient kasbahs, visited movie studios, and slept near a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this guide, I share exactly how I planned my two-day tour, what I experienced on the road, where I stayed, and whether guided tours like GetYourGuide Marrakech are worth it. If you are travellers from the UK or US looking for the best tours in Marrakech, this detailed itinerary answers every question.

How to plan a 2-day tour to Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech?

When I started planning my Marrakech day trip, I quickly realised that Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate deserved more than a rushed one-day visit. Many travellers from the UK and US try to squeeze everything into one long day, but after my experience, I strongly recommend two days.

I compared several options, including renting a car, hiring a private driver, and booking organised tours. In the end, I booked one of the best tours in Marrakech through GetYourGuide Marrakech. What convinced me was the clear itinerary, English-speaking guide, hotel pickup, and the balance between guided visits and free time.

If you prefer independence, renting a car is possible, but driving through the Atlas Mountains can be tiring. For first-time visitors to Morocco, guided tours offer peace of mind and local insight, especially when visiting historic sites like kasbahs and ksars.

In 2025, we paid £530 ($670) for a private 2-day tour from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou for two people. Based on our personal experience, this price offered excellent value, as it included a private car with an experienced driver-guide, two separate rooms, and dinner. The tour felt well-organized and comfortable from start to finish. Entrance fees to the kasbahs were also covered. On site, we chose to hire local guides for an additional fee. While this is optional, it is strongly recommended if you want to truly understand the history and significance of the kasbahs, as there is very little interpretation available without a guide. As our driver, Brahim, explained to us, supporting local guides is also a responsible choice, since guiding is one of the few sustainable sources of income for people in the area.

My two-day itinerary from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou

I started my journey early in the morning from my riad in Marrakech Riad el Hara. By 7:30 am, we were already heading south, leaving the palm trees behind and climbing steadily into the High Atlas Mountains. The excitement grew with every curve of the road.

The two-day itinerary felt perfectly paced. Day one focused on the journey itself, stopping at scenic viewpoints, historic kasbahs, and hidden valleys. Day two was all about cinema history and exploring Ouarzazate before returning to Marrakech.

Tizi n'Tichka: Morocco's highest mountain pass

Crossing Tizi n'Tichka was one of the highlights of the entire trip. At over 2,200 metres above sea level, this mountain pass offers breathtaking panoramic views. I stepped out of the vehicle several times just to breathe the fresh air and take photos.

The road itself is an experience, winding through dramatic landscapes that feel worlds away from Marrakech. Small roadside cafés allowed us to stop for mint tea while admiring the Atlas peaks. For travellers from the US or UK, this drive alone justifies the journey.

A hidden gem: The beautiful Ounila Valley

I didn’t expect the Ounila Valley to impress me as much as it did. Unlike the more touristy routes, this valley feels authentic and untouched. I passed through small Berber villages where daily life continues much as it has for generations.

The red-earth roads, green riverbanks, and adobe houses created a striking contrast. Walking briefly through one of the villages, I felt welcomed by curious smiles and friendly greetings. It was a reminder that Morocco is as much about people as places.

Kasbah Telouet: Remnants of historic glory

Kasbah Telouet was once the stronghold of the powerful Glaoui family. When I arrived, parts of the kasbah were in ruins, but others still revealed incredible craftsmanship. I walked through ornate rooms with faded mosaics and carved cedar ceilings.

Our guide explained the political history behind the kasbah, which made the visit even more meaningful. Standing inside these walls, I could imagine the power and influence once held here.

Ksar Ait Ben Haddou: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Arriving at Ait Ben Haddou felt surreal. I had seen photos before, but nothing compares to seeing this ancient ksar rise from the landscape in person. Crossing the shallow river and walking toward the fortified village felt like stepping back in time.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has been used in countless films and series, including Hollywood productions familiar to travellers from the US and UK. I spent hours exploring narrow alleys, climbing to the top for panoramic views, and simply soaking in the atmosphere.

Guided tour of Ait Ben Haddou

I joined a guided tour inside the ksar, and I’m glad I did. Without a guide, it’s easy to miss important details. I learned how families once lived inside the walls and how the ksar functioned as a defensive settlement.

The guide also shared filming anecdotes, pointing out exact locations used in famous movies. This context transformed the visit from a simple walk into a rich cultural experience.

Where to stay in Ait Ben Haddou?

Most tours suggest staying overnight in the nearby, larger town Ouarzazate rather than in Ait Ben Haddou itself. Ouarzazate is where you find the larger hotels, but that wasn’t what I was looking for. I wanted a relaxing night on the countryside and the opportunity to see the sun set and rise over the old ksar. I also requested individual, ensuite rooms with heating for my father and I. Travelling to Ait Ben Haddou in January can get pretty cold as soon as the sun sets.

There are several guesthouses and riads offering traditional hospitality, comfortable rooms, and rooftop views of the ksar. Staying overnight added depth to my Marrakech day trip, turning it into a truly immersive journey.

Riad Paradise of Silence sits is in the outskirts of the new town, more or less surrounded by mountains. Upon arrival we were welcomed with mint tea by the lovely pool outside and we spent the afternoon chilling on the hotel premises. Just like in the riads in Marrakech, all rooms in Paradise of Silence are unique. I got a large room with AC, bathroom with hot water (without pressure, but still), lots of quirky details and when I opened my window, I could spot the old town in the distance.

For dinner, we got a wholesome 3-course meal with a delicious chicken tanjine for main. Including us, we were five guests staying at the riad that night, and the meals were a social setting at set times. Sharing a bottle of local wine with a complete stranger over a good dinner is something everyone should do at least once!

Seeing the sunrise from Riad Paradise of Silence

Waking up early was worth it for the sunrise. From the terrace of Riad Paradise of Silence, I watched the first light touch the walls of Ait Ben Haddou. The colours shifted from deep red to soft gold.

It was one of those travel moments that stays with you forever. I enjoyed breakfast on the terrace, listening to birds and enjoying the peaceful silence before continuing the journey.

Atlas Studios: Africa's Hollywood

On day two, I headed to Ouarzazate and visited Atlas Studios. Walking through massive film sets felt surreal. I recognised scenes from films and series I had watched back home in the UK and US.

The Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate is the largest film studio on the African continent, hence the nickname Hollywood of Africa. It opened in 1983 and has since hosted numerous of large movie and tv productions. The Jewel of the Nile, The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Babel, Prison Break, 7 years in Tibet and Asterix and Obelix are just some well-known examples. The studio is definitely worth a visit, and if you are really lucky you bump into international movie stars on set

The scale of the studios surprised me, and the guide explained why Morocco has become a favourite filming destination. For movie lovers, this stop is unmissable.

Kasbah Taourirt: More historic grandeur

Kasbah Taourirt, located in the heart of Ouarzazate, impressed me with its size and detail. Unlike Telouet, this kasbah is well preserved and easy to explore.

Another of the Glaoui family’s residences, and even larger than Telouet Kasbah. As I’ve written earlier, the Glaoui’s were one of the rickest families in the world and their influence stretched further south than just Morocco. Due to their huge “army”, they controlled large parts of the Trans-Saharan trade. This “army” kept the caravans safe from various local bandits and villain groups.

Similar to Telouet Kasbah it was left empty after Glaoui’s fall when the French left Morocco in the 1950’s. But the local ministry of culture is now renovating it and putting it back to its former glory. Parts of the old palace was closed for renovation at the time of our visit, but we saw enough to understand what it must have been like back in the days. Unlike at Telouet, it didn’t have rich decorations and tile Zellij. On the other hand, all walls were covered in beautiful, traditional tadelakt plaster

I wandered through courtyards, staircases, and decorated rooms while learning about its role as a former administrative centre. It added another layer to my understanding of southern Moroccan history.

Kasbah or Ksar, what is the difference?

Before this trip, I used the words interchangeably. I learned that a kasbah is typically a fortified residence, often belonging to a powerful family, while a ksar is a fortified village housing multiple families.

Understanding this difference helped me appreciate sites like Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet on a deeper level.

Argan Oil Cooperative in the Atlas

On the return journey, I stopped at a women-run argan oil cooperative. I watched the traditional production process and learned how argan oil supports local communities.

I purchased a small bottle as a souvenir, knowing it directly benefited the women working there. It felt like a meaningful way to support local livelihoods.
